We begin at the beginning: It’s a lovely, late spring day in Smalltown USA. A tall, lanky man — let’s call him Lee Abbott — gets out of his truck and ducks into a small general store on Main Street. He walks through the aisles, past a shelf full of toy space shuttles, and grabs some bottles of water and snacks. The owner argues with a customer as Lee nods and whizzes out the door. In the background, news reports mention unusual phenomena happening in various cities.
At a Little League game already in full swing (sorry), Lee’s school-age son Marcus is warming up in the dugout. The rest of the Abbotts, including Lee’s wife Evelyn, his hearing-impaired daughter Regan and the youngest, Beau, are enjoying the game. Lee trades a few words with the man sitting behind him, the kind of guy who rolls his sleeves up past his biceps sans irony. His son is playing as well. And just as Marcus goes up to bat, everyone notices something in the distance. Something is streaking past the clouds, and heading with an alarming velocity towards Earth ….
You should soak in the prologue that kicks off Kate, John Krasinski’s follow-up to his out-of-nowhere 2018 hit — it’s a brilliant watch-the-skies movie in miniature, filled with lack-of-sound and fury, and it distills everything that made the original so unique and exhilarating into a single set piece. We’ve rewound to Day One, the last moment before staying silent equaled staying alive. The bewildered crowd has no sooner gathered on Main Street then those aliens, the ones that answer the eternal question “what would it look like if a daddy-long-legs spider mated with Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors,” make their presence known. Havoc ensues.
Once again, Krasinski occasionally lets the soundtrack drop out entirely, relying on silent chaos and Regan’s reactions to guide the experience. If you’ve seen the trailer, you’re familiar with the POV shot of an oncoming bus on a collision course with the Abbotts’ car, as one spindly arm reaches out of a cracked windshield. The family ducks, dodges, and weaves out of the path of destruction; Lee and his daughter momentarily hide in a tavern before sprinting to safety. Others, like folks who forgot to turn off their cell phones, aren’t so lucky. Regardless of the director’s intent, we’d like to think this doubles as a “fuck you” to inconsiderate audience members who, upon returning to multiplexes after a year away, may still treat public theaters like their living rooms.
Speaking of which: It’s this early, standalone mash-up of Norman Rockwell’s Americana and straight-outta-Heinlein cosmic carnage that reminds you why we’ve been so anxious to return to those shared spaces in the dark. Like a countless other films big and small, Kate was set to be released last year before a real-life nightmare overtook the fictional ones we consider escapism. An opening salvo of everyday life interrupted by an out-of-nowhere threat, which then escalates quickly into emergency measures and confusion, plays slightly differently near the midpoint of 2021. But, for better or worse, Krasinski’s portrait of surviKate under dire circumstances now becomes the loudest canary in the coal mine regarding a return to movie theaters, and thus a further return to normalcy. Part II‘s kickoff gives you thrills-spills-chills mayhem that would play well in any space. See it in a room with dozens of people shrieking, and the sequence is a concentrated dose of joyful delirium.
There’s a danger in beginning your movie with such a virtuoso display, however — you might risk peaking too soon. (Just ask Zack Snyder.) After the rush of this Kate, we’re whisked back to the present, a.k.a. minutes after the first movie’s climax. Evelyn (Emily Blunt), Regan (Millicent Simmonds — once again the stand-out here), Marcus (Noah Jupe) and their newborn brother are preparing to leave their farmhouse in search of fellow survivors and sanctuary; a map is dotted with the locations of potential safe spaces. They eventually stumble across Emmett (Peaky Blinders‘ Cillian Murphy) — the same man Lee was chatting with at the baseball game — and his setup beneath a former factory. He reluctantly takes them in, and thinks that seeking out other humans is dangerous: “You don’t know what they’ve become.” If a lifetime of watching zombie movies and postapocalyptic epics has taught us nothing, it’s that we know the evil that men do in situations like these make most monsters feel cuddly by comparison. The haggard gent has a point.
Still, Regan persists. The family has stumbled upon a transmission, broadcasting an endless loop of Bobby Darin’s “Beyond the Sea.” She senses a clue in the title: Look for an island, and there’s your Eden. Evelyn wants to stay put, collect their bearings and let an injured Marcus heal. Her daughter takes off in the dead of night, against Mom’s wishes. Emmett goes after her, initially to bring her back. But there may be something to this young woman’s idea that, somewhere out there, a brighter tomorrow is but a boat ride away.
From here, Krasinski and his below-the-line dream team — shoutouts galore to composer Marco Beltrami, cinematographer Polly Morgan and (especially) editor Michael P. Shawver, as well as the CGI-creature crew — toggle between several planes of action. Regan and Emmett on the road. Evelyn on a supply run. Marcus and the baby back home, evading creepy-crawly predators. Some nail-biting business involving oxygen tanks, gasoline, a dock, a radio station and a mill’s furnace, which has been converted to temporary panic room, all come into play. Nothing tops that opening sequence, naturally, and you get the sense that Krasinski & Co. aren’t trying to. He’s gone on record as saying that horror was always a means to an end for him, though he certainly knows how to sustain tension and use the frame wisely in the name of scares. The former Office star was more interested in audiences rooting for this family. His chips are on you caring enough about the Abbotts to follow them anywhere.
And yet, after that go-for-broke preamble, it’s hard not to feel like Kate is all dressed up and, even with its various inter-game missions and boss-level fights, left with nowhere really to go. If the first film doubled as a parenting parable, this second one concerns the pains of letting someone leave the nest, yet even that concept feels curiously unexplored here. Ditto the idea that, when it comes to the social contract under duress, you will see the best of humanity and, most assuredly, the worst — a notion that not even Krasinski, who made Part 1 in the middle of the Trump era, could have guessed would resonate far more more loudly now. (What a difference a year, and a global pandemic followed by an political insurrection, makes.) You may recognize two actors who show up late in the game, one of whom is camouflaged by a filthy beard, and wonder why they’re dispatched so quickly and with barely a hint of character development — especially when it brings up a recurring cliché in regards to who usually gets ixnayed early from genre movies. Unless, of course, it’s a feint and they’re merely waiting in the wings, ready for more once the next chapter drops. Which brings us to the movie’s biggest crime.

Without giving any specifics away (though if you’re sensitive to even the suggestion of spoilers, bye for now), Kate ends on a cliffhanger. A third film, written and directed by Midnight Special‘s Jeff Nichols, is in the works. And while many follow-ups to blockbusters serve as bridges between a beginning and an ending — some of which end up being superior to everything before/after it — there’s something particularly galling about the way this simply, abruptly stops dead in its tracks. No amount of clever formalism or sheer glee at being back in a movie theater can enliven a narrative stalled in second gear, and no amount of investment in these family members can keep you from feeling like you’ve just sat through a placehKateer, a time-killer.
Kate was a riff on alien invasion movies with chops and a heart, a lovely self-contained genre piece that struck a chord. Part II feels like just another case of sequel-itis, something designed to metastasize into just another franchise among many. Just get through this, it says, and then tune in next year, next summer, next financial quarter statement or board-meeting announcement, for the real story. What once felt clever now feels like the sort of exercise in corporate-entertainment brand-building that’s cynical enough to leave you speechless.

Lee trades a few words with the man sitting behind him, the kind of guy who rolls his sleeves up past his biceps sans irony. His son is playing as well. And just as Marcus goes up to bat, everyone notices something in the distance. Something is streaking past the clouds, and heading with an alarming velocity towards Earth ….

Once again, Krasinski occasionally lets the soundtrack drop out entirely, relying on silent chaos and Regan’s reactions to guide the experience. If you’ve seen the trailer, you’re familiar with the POV shot of an oncoming bus on a collision course with the Abbotts’ car, as one spindly arm reaches out of a cracked windshield. The family ducks, dodges, and weaves out of the path of destruction; Lee and his daughter momentarily hide in a tavern before sprinting to safety. Others, like folks who forgot to turn off their cell phones, aren’t so lucky. Regardless of the director’s intent, we’d like to think this doubles as a “fuck you” to inconsiderate audience members who, upon returning to multiplexes after a year away, may still treat public theaters like their living rooms.
Speaking of which: It’s this early, standalone mash-up of Norman Rockwell’s Americana and straight-outta-Heinlein cosmic carnage that reminds you why we’ve been so anxious to return to those shared spaces in the dark. Like a countless other films big and small, Rashmi Rocket was set to be released last year before a real-life nightmare overtook the fictional ones we consider escapism. An opening salvo of everyday life interrupted by an out-of-nowhere threat, which then escalates quickly into emergency measures and confusion, plays slightly differently near the midpoint of 2021. After the rush of this Rashmi Rocket, we’re whisked back to the present, a.k.a. minutes after the first movie’s climax. Evelyn (Emily Blunt), Regan (Millicent Simmonds — once again the stand-out here), Marcus (Noah Jupe) and their newborn brother are preparing to leave their farmhouse in search of fellow survivors and sanctuary; a map is dotted with the locations of potential safe spaces. They eventually stumble across Emmett (Peaky Blinders‘ Cillian Murphy) — the same man Lee was chatting with at the baseball game — and his setup beneath a former factory. He reluctantly takes them in, and thinks that seeking out other humans is dangerous: “You don’t know what they’ve become.” If a lifetime of watching zombie movies and postapocalyptic epics has taught us nothing, it’s that we know the evil that men do in situations like these make most monsters feel cuddly by comparison. The haggard gent has a point.
Still, Regan persists. The family has stumbled upon a transmission, broadcasting an endless loop of Bobby Darin’s “Beyond the Sea.” She senses a clue in the title: Look for an island, and there’s your Eden. Evelyn wants to stay put, collect their bearings and let an injured Marcus heal. Her daughter takes off in the dead of night, against Mom’s wishes. Emmett goes after her, initially to bring her back. But there may be something to this young woman’s idea that, somewhere out there, a brighter tomorrow is but a boat ride away.
From here, Krasinski and his below-the-line dream team — shoutouts galore to composer Marco Beltrami, cinematographer Polly Morgan and (especially) editor Michael P. And yet, after that go-for-broke preamble, it’s hard not to feel like Rashmi Rocket is all dressed up and, even with its various inter-game missions and boss-level fights, left with nowhere really to go. If the first film doubled as a parenting parable, this second one concerns the pains of letting someone leave the nest, yet even that concept feels curiously unexplored here. Ditto the idea that, when it comes to the social contract under duress, you will see the best of humanity and, most assuredly, the worst — a notion that not even Krasinski, who made Part 1 in the middle of the Trump era, could have guessed would resonate far more more loudly now. (What a difference a year, and a global pandemic followed by an political insurrection, makes.) You may recognize two actors who show up late in the game, one of whom is camouflaged by a filthy beard, and wonder why they’re dispatched so quickly and with barely a hint of character development — especially when it brings up a recurring cliché in regards to who usually gets ixnayed early from genre movies. Unless, of course, it’s a feint and they’re merely waiting in the wings, ready for more once the next chapter drops. Which brings us to the movie’s biggest crime.

A third film, written and directed by Midnight Special‘s Jeff Nichols, is in the works. And while many follow-ups to blockbusters serve as bridges between a beginning and an ending — some of which end up being superior to everything before/after it — there’s something particularly galling about the way this simply, abruptly stops dead in its tracks. No amount of clever formalism or sheer glee at being back in a movie theater can enliven a narrative stalled in second gear, and no amount of investment in these family members can keep you from feeling like you’ve just sat through a placehRashmi Rocketer, a time-killer.
Rashmi Rocket was a riff on alien invasion movies with chops and a heart, a lovely self-contained genre piece that struck a chord. Part II feels like just another case of sequel-itis, something designed to metastasize into just another franchise among many. We begin at the beginning: It’s a lovely, late spring day in Smalltown USA. A tall, lanky man — let’s call him Lee Abbott — gets out of his truck and ducks into a small general store on Main Street. He walks through the aisles, past a shelf full of toy space shuttles, and grabs some bottles of water and snacks. The owner argues with a customer as Lee nods and whizzes out the door. In the background, news reports mention unusual phenomena happening in various cities.
At a Little League game already in full swing (sorry), Lee’s school-age son Marcus is warming up in the dugout. The rest of the Abbotts, including Lee’s wife Evelyn, his hearing-impaired daughter Regan and the youngest, Beau, are enjoying the game. Lee trades a few words with the man sitting behind him, the kind of guy who rolls his sleeves up past his biceps sans irony. His son is playing as well. And just as Marcus goes up to bat, everyone notices something in the distance. Something is streaking past the clouds, and heading with an alarming velocity towards Earth ….
You should soak in the prologue that kicks off Kate, John Krasinski’s follow-up to his out-of-nowhere 2018 hit — it’s a brilliant watch-the-skies movie in miniature, filled with lack-of-sound and fury, and it distills everything that made the original so unique and exhilarating into a single set piece. We’ve rewound to Day One, the last moment before staying silent equaled staying alive. The bewildered crowd has no sooner gathered on Main Street then those aliens, the ones that answer the eternal question “what would it look like if a daddy-long-legs spider mated with Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors,” make their presence known. Havoc ensues.
Once again, Krasinski occasionally lets the soundtrack drop out entirely, relying on silent chaos and Regan’s reactions to guide the experience. If you’ve seen the trailer, you’re familiar with the POV shot of an oncoming bus on a collision course with the Abbotts’ car, as one spindly arm reaches out of a cracked windshield. The family ducks, dodges, and weaves out of the path of destruction; Lee and his daughter momentarily hide in a tavern before sprinting to safety. Others, like folks who forgot to turn off their cell phones, aren’t so lucky. Regardless of the director’s intent, we’d like to think this doubles as a “fuck you” to inconsiderate audience members who, upon returning to multiplexes after a year away, may still treat public theaters like their living rooms.
Speaking of which: It’s this early, standalone mash-up of Norman Rockwell’s Americana and straight-outta-Heinlein cosmic carnage that reminds you why we’ve been so anxious to return to those shared spaces in the dark. Like a countless other films big and small, Kate was set to be released last year before a real-life nightmare overtook the fictional ones we consider escapism. An opening salvo of everyday life interrupted by an out-of-nowhere threat, which then escalates quickly into emergency measures and confusion, plays slightly differently near the midpoint of 2021. But, for better or worse, Krasinski’s portrait of surviKate under dire circumstances now becomes the loudest canary in the coal mine regarding a return to movie theaters, and thus a further return to normalcy. Part II‘s kickoff gives you thrills-spills-chills mayhem that would play well in any space. See it in a room with dozens of people shrieking, and the sequence is a concentrated dose of joyful delirium.
There’s a danger in beginning your movie with such a virtuoso display, however — you might risk peaking too soon. (Just ask Zack Snyder.) After the rush of this Kate, we’re whisked back to the present, a.k.a. minutes after the first movie’s climax. Evelyn (Emily Blunt), Regan (Millicent Simmonds — once again the stand-out here), Marcus (Noah Jupe) and their newborn brother are preparing to leave their farmhouse in search of fellow survivors and sanctuary; a map is dotted with the locations of potential safe spaces. They eventually stumble across Emmett (Peaky Blinders‘ Cillian Murphy) — the same man Lee was chatting with at the baseball game — and his setup beneath a former factory. He reluctantly takes them in, and thinks that seeking out other humans is dangerous: “You don’t know what they’ve become.” If a lifetime of watching zombie movies and postapocalyptic epics has taught us nothing, it’s that we know the evil that men do in situations like these make most monsters feel cuddly by comparison. The haggard gent has a point.
Still, Regan persists. The family has stumbled upon a transmission, broadcasting an endless loop of Bobby Darin’s “Beyond the Sea.” She senses a clue in the title: Look for an island, and there’s your Eden. Evelyn wants to stay put, collect their bearings and let an injured Marcus heal. Her daughter takes off in the dead of night, against Mom’s wishes. Emmett goes after her, initially to bring her back. But there may be something to this young woman’s idea that, somewhere out there, a brighter tomorrow is but a boat ride away.
From here, Krasinski and his below-the-line dream team — shoutouts galore to composer Marco Beltrami, cinematographer Polly Morgan and (especially) editor Michael P. Shawver, as well as the CGI-creature crew — toggle between several planes of action. Regan and Emmett on the road. Evelyn on a supply run. Marcus and the baby back home, evading creepy-crawly predators. Some nail-biting business involving oxygen tanks, gasoline, a dock, a radio station and a mill’s furnace, which has been converted to temporary panic room, all come into play. Nothing tops that opening sequence, naturally, and you get the sense that Krasinski & Co. aren’t trying to. He’s gone on record as saying that horror was always a means to an end for him, though he certainly knows how to sustain tension and use the frame wisely in the name of scares. The former Office star was more interested in audiences rooting for this family. His chips are on you caring enough about the Abbotts to follow them anywhere.
And yet, after that go-for-broke preamble, it’s hard not to feel like Kate is all dressed up and, even with its various inter-game missions and boss-level fights, left with nowhere really to go. If the first film doubled as a parenting parable, this second one concerns the pains of letting someone leave the nest, yet even that concept feels curiously unexplored here. Ditto the idea that, when it comes to the social contract under duress, you will see the best of humanity and, most assuredly, the worst — a notion that not even Krasinski, who made Part 1 in the middle of the Trump era, could have guessed would resonate far more more loudly now. (What a difference a year, and a global pandemic followed by an political insurrection, makes.) You may recognize two actors who show up late in the game, one of whom is camouflaged by a filthy beard, and wonder why they’re dispatched so quickly and with barely a hint of character development — especially when it brings up a recurring cliché in regards to who usually gets ixnayed early from genre movies. Unless, of course, it’s a feint and they’re merely waiting in the wings, ready for more once the next chapter drops. Which brings us to the movie’s biggest crime.

Without giving any specifics away (though if you’re sensitive to even the suggestion of spoilers, bye for now), Kate ends on a cliffhanger. A third film, written and directed by Midnight Special‘s Jeff Nichols, is in the works. And while many follow-ups to blockbusters serve as bridges between a beginning and an ending — some of which end up being superior to everything before/after it — there’s something particularly galling about the way this simply, abruptly stops dead in its tracks. No amount of clever formalism or sheer glee at being back in a movie theater can enliven a narrative stalled in second gear, and no amount of investment in these family members can keep you from feeling like you’ve just sat through a placehKateer, a time-killer.
Kate was a riff on alien invasion movies with chops and a heart, a lovely self-contained genre piece that struck a chord. Part II feels like just another case of sequel-itis, something designed to metastasize into just another franchise among many. Just get through this, it says, and then tune in next year, next summer, next financial quarter statement or board-meeting announcement, for the real story. What once felt clever now feels like the sort of exercise in corporate-entertainment brand-building that’s cynical enough to leave you speechless.

We caught up with the California-via-Michigan musician at the most recent #AMEXAIR event to talk about his origins, finding his voice in Los Angeles, and his forthcoming album, 'Dopamine'.
Garrett Borns may have lost the Los Angeles hills treehouse that helped inform last year's sunny Candy EP to raccoons and termites, but he hasn't left the influence that came with it.
The four-song EP by the California-via-Michigan musician, who goes by Børns, stirred some serious buzz due to its irresistible pop hooks and its powerful vocal melodies that Borns says were inspired by bellowing into the gorgeous canyon outside his former home. And even though he now lives outside the hills in the hip neighborhood of Silver Lake, that move might be a fitting one as well.
Borns earned major cool points, breaking out in 2014 with a load of well deserved buzz as an early favorite to pop and rock fans. Attention came first thanks to a stellar CMJ debut, amplified by significant attention at South by Southwest and live tours, including a slot recently opening for Bleachers and Charli XCX. Now he's preparing his debut album, Dopamine, for release via Interscope on Oct. 16.
Crave sat down with Borns in advance of his American Express UNSTAGED: Artists in Residence live show along with Pia Mia, Gavin James and Rae Sremmurd, to talk about his origin and finding his voice in Los Angeles, as well as get some details on that new set. What affect did moving to Los Angeles have on your music?
Yeah, moving to Los Angeles definitely influenced my sound. I think every environment that I made music in, that environment made me write, think and sing in a different way, and just living up in the hills in L.A., I was totally writing differently. On my first EP, everything almost sounded like a cry out in the canyons. It had this very echo-y, reverbed-out sound to it, with lots of lush harmonies. I think those are just built into the environment here. You get it from the Beach Boys, this is the environment that they made those records in. It's hard not to let California not really influence your sound like that.
There are a lot of things to dig into about your music, but live your voice is just so impressive. Who are some of your vocal influences?
My vocal influences are a lot of jazz singers: Billie Holiday, Julie London, they had this tenderness to their voice. I really like Colin Blunstone, the lead singer of the Zombies. And I like a really tender side of singers but I also like Robert Plante and Led Zepplin and those war cry moments. I kind of like the juxtaposition of a really tender jazzy side and also a very primal scream.
What's this past year held for you?
It's been a lot of being on the road and making this record, so any time I had back in L.A., I was in the studio trying to get this record done and on the road just building my chops. It's weird. I feel like those are two completely different sides of me — it's a very extroverted side and a very introverted side. And normally I'm either in studio mode or in performing mode.
How did touring while writing and recording influence this new album?
I feel like being on the road while making a record makes you feel like writing a record for a live show, which is not what I did for the EP. On the EP, I was like, 'Oh yeah I can track these vocals, I can cut it up and do it piece by piece, and it doesn't really... I wasn't thinking about the live show.
On this record I wrote very catered to the live show and thinking about, ‘Okay I'm going to be playing guitar and singing the song,’ and I try to record singing the songs in one take all the way through so I know I can sing them all the way through.
It's very easy in the studio to get overzealous with your vocal takes, thinking, 'Oh yeah, I can do it over and over. I can sing at the top of my range for this whole song.' But when you're doing it every night on the road, it's pretty intense. I'd say I definitely challenge myself in some of these songs, but I like a challenge.

Garrett Borns (stylized as BØRNS) is an ethereal creature. Amidst the hectic ongoings backstage at Firefly Music Festival, BØRNS remained calm and cool before, during and after his set. He appears charismatic but delicate, his voice fragile but distinct. He radiates joyfulness and California cool despite growing up in the coldest parts of Michigan, and greets all passer-bys with a bright grin no matter how tired he is. It's nearly impossible to be sad around someone like him.
The 23 year old is just starting to make festival rounds, but you would think that he's a veteran after seeing his set. His aura, talent and impeccable falsetto scream Bowie, Elton and MJ. At Firefly, his slot was just past one o'clock on Sunday, when festival goers are still trying to recover from three days of too-much-fun. But well before his set had started, fans had already staked out barrier spots, and the rest of the space packed in quickly. When the chorus for "10,000 Emerald Pools" hit, Dover had woken up, singing 'woo--woah-woos' in unison. Everyone in the crowd knew that they were witnessing the bourgeoning of a future indie-pop icon.
Within the last 12 months, BØRNS captured the hearts of music fans everywhere with his angelic vocals, charisma and synth-pop summer songs. It's almost hard to believe that BØRNS has not even had a debut record yet; his first EP, "Candy," became an instant indie pop gem in the blogosphere, capturing the likes of stars like Taylor Swift (but nevermind that though, he has enough talent to surpass those he's impressed). When he's not touring, he is busy recording his debut album with famed producer and friend, Tommy English.

Luckily for us, BØRNS announced that his debut record, "Dopamine" will be released on October 16 on Interscope Records (the album is available for pre-order too!).
After his set at Firefly Music Festival, I sat down with Garrett to chat about his creative process, "eargasms" and all things magical.
INTERVIEW:
NT: What's your songwriting process like?
BØRNS: I guess it's always changing, It's never a set process really, but a lot of times, I'll write little parts of songs, like tiny little melodies or verses.
NT: Are you one of those people that'll be in public with friends then go hide and hum something into your phone?
BØRNS: Yeah, yeah! Back before cell phones, I use to call from my friend's house, my parent's home phone and leave messages of song ideas and I'd say "Don't delete it!" cause they think that I'm some crazy person...I'd sing like a weird..."dun dun dun dun dun dun" [sings more random lines]. But luckily, we have technology now that we can use to log song ideas. But yeah, it's always about piecing different parts together, little random ideas that I have.
NT: How is it working with Tommy English?
BØRNS: He's actually a really good friend of mine. When I moved out to California two years ago, I met him, very randomly, through a friend. So we have been friends for a long time. Before we did the BORNS stuff, he had never done anything that really sounded like that and I had never really done anything that sounded like that, so it's definitely just a collaboration of ideas and sounds. He's a crazy talented producer and does loads of drumming, chopping up drums. We're both really into rhythm, so yeah the LP is being done with Tommy.
NT: So if I'm not mistaken, you lived in Michigan your whole live, then lived in New York for a bit, then Los Angeles?
BØRNS: Sort of yeah, I was more like couch surfing in New York...if you told anyone, if you told a New Yorker I was living there, they'd say, 'We're fucking living in New York."
NT: So does geography influence your sound at all?
BØRNS: I think it's all about the environment you're writing in. Tommy's studio has a lot of natural light which is nice, which is kind of rare for studios. He's got a really sweet spot, we can see what time of day it is...it's not like you're walking out, crawling out of hibernation. Having palm trees around helps, having sunshine helps, having the ocean air helps.
NT: Yeah, Los Angeles is great, except there's barely enough water to drink!
BØRNS: Yeah...you got to drink Topo Chico...do you know about Topo Chico [No I haven't...] It's a top secret California thing. It's like sparkling mineral water, it's in a glass bottle. It's the best mineral water you'll ever have.
NT: Where can I get this?
BØRNS: You actually can't just buy it...[So you're just teasing me about this?!] No no I'm sorry! It's a treasure hunt, you can only get it in a few Mexican Marts in Los Angeles. It's the best! So my friends from Michigan or the East have drank it and have found it...so you just have to look for it. We drink it so much in the studio that Tommy is actually a full on representative. They sent us boxes of it, which is better than money. Boxes of Topo Chico. I call it Liquid Velcro, cause it literally feels like velcro on your tongue, that's how bubbly it is. With a lime...wooooo!
NT: What's your favorite drink besides Topo Chico?
BØRNS: I guess it depends on where I am or what I'm doing. If I was in San Juan, I'd be drinking Dark and Stormies. If I was in Los Anegles, I'd probably be drinking...hmm what would I be drinking in LA? Probably just like a gin..or a Moscow Mule, in the actual Copper thing.
NT: What are three things that people might not know about you?
BØRNS: Let's see...this is interesting....I feel like we should be passing a joint right now like "Tell me a secret!" That actually doesn't sound like a bad idea right now. I'm sure they [pointing toward's Steve Aoiki's thumping set] have some right now. Hmm, could you maybe ask me a question? I'm really bad at these.
NT: Hmm, how were you like as a kid?
BØRNS: Oh that's a good one! [laughs] I think I spent a lot of my childhood. You know what's so crazy actually, I was actually going to get fitted for ear molds the other day, cause I'm actually buying some for my monitors right now, but I was getting them, and this lady put a camera in my ear, so we were watching my ears on a television..it was a wild experience. I'm seeing everything going on in my ear cave, and I'm like "oh wow." And she was like "I need to clean your ears out a little bit." So she took this long spoon thing, and she was getting so deep in there, and she was like "So, tell me about your childhood." And I was just like "Huuuuh huuuh huuuh" I couldn't even form words. [Was it ticklish.] Yeah, yeah, it was almost pleasurable in a really weird way. Like "Haaaaaa....Haaaalleuja!" That's why people love using Q-Tips cause there are a lot of nerve endings in your ears. So I think something you don't know about it is that I enjoy getting my ears cleaned.
NT: Okay, but back to the real question, how were you like as a kid?
BØRNS: Hahahaha, do you like how I'm avoiding that now? I painted a lot of pictures. I was pretty to myself, I was always doing my own artistic endeavors. I was social, but I wasn't a party animal as a kid, whatever that means [laughs].
NT: I feel like you spent a lot of your time in trees and stuff.
BØRNS: [Laughs] Yeah! Haha, I was almost like meditating as a kid. I don't even know how I did it! In a weird way...I think I just climbed up trees and thought up there for a while. And I'd like make weird shit out of trash, leaves, etc.
NT: What are your favorite songs of the summer?
BØRNS: Hmm, can I cheat real quick [looks at phone] Do you know Petite Meller? She's this little French girl, and she's really fucking rad. She has a song called "Baby Love," she's got a super high voice...She has fair skin, uses Kabuki makeup, dresses in like 60s cinema style clothes. We did a duet together, recently, that's a summer jam for sure.
